Genetic characterization has allowed us to approximate the physical characteristics of fungal individuals. Even
so, our concepts of ‘the individual’ are challenged by indeterminant organisms such as fungi. An understanding
of the fungal ‘sense of self’ requires a deeper dive into unique aspects of fungal biology. How do we reconcile
our views of individualism with organisms that can fragment, disperse and re-fuse? What are the mechanisms,
if any, that counterbalance inter-individual mutation, accompanied by drift and selection, that can blur genetic
definition of an individual? And, from a ‘fungal perspective’, is the concept of the individual relevant?
